2007: OUR BIGGEST YEAR EVER!
| |
 |
|
Over 2000 Volunteers Make a Difference for the Jones Falls in 2007! 2007 was a tremendous year for the JFWA thanks to our dedicated corps of volunteers! Our volunteers did everything from planting trees in concrete-like soil to pulling an ancient furnace out of the Jones Falls - it was a productive, fun, and adventurous year! Here are some of our 2008 accomplishments: - 37 restoration projects completed: 12 in Baltimore County, 25 in Baltimore City - 2089 volunteers worked 4929 hours - 33,150 pounds of trash was removed from our streams and parks. - 61,000 square feet of stream buffer were cleared of invasive plants.- 954 trees, 161 shrubs and 1110 wildflowers were planted at our parks and schools. - Our 2007 stock of trees will remove 19,080 pounds of air pollutants and soak up 333,900 gallons of storm water per year.
Thanks for all of our volunteers! If you haven't volunteered for a JFWA project yet, join us in 2008 for fun, family-friendly activities that make a difference in our local environment. Contact Suzanne to see how you can get involved. | |

NOTES FROM THE WATERSHED
| |
 |
Sewage Makes the News:
Sewer overflows have plagued the Jones Falls and its tributaries over
the years, with at least 3 major leaks spewing thousands of gallons
into our stream (and the Inner Harbor) every day. Two recent articles
detail the struggle to address the problems of our aging sewer system - the
Baltimore Sun highlights the 2007's low sewage levels due to the drought, while the City Paper discusses ongoing leaks in Canton and beyond as well as the City's work to repair the sewer system.
While the City is upgrading its sewer lines according to the Consent Decree, the following leaks continue to pollute the Jones Falls: 1. Cold Spring Lane/Greenspring Ave. (seen above) First reported: February 2006 Flow: 21,600 gallons/day or 7,884,000 gallons/year 2. Stony Run/University Parkway First Reported: December 2001 Flow: 28,800 gallons/day or 10,512,000 gallons/year 3. Baltimore Streetcar Museum/Falls Road
First Reported: 1970
Flow: 288,800 gallons/day or 1,054,150,000 gallons/year or a total of 39,003,550,000 gallons since 1970!
Looking For a Few Dirty Streams: We are recruiting both volunteers and trashy streams for our 2008 Project Clean Stream, scheduled for April 5th. If there is a stream in your neighborhood that needs a good cleaning, let us know and we'll try to get a group out to take care of it. Better yet, become a team leader and recruit your friends and family to clean it with you. The JFWA provides all supplies for the day. Contact Suzanne for more with clean-up site suggestions and volunteer information.
Free Trees for Local Schools: Does your son or daughter's school campus need more shade? Are you a teacher looking for a hands-on, cost-free outdoor project? The JFWA has hundreds of Maryland-native trees for schools located in the Jones Falls watershed, available for planting this spring or fall. We bring the trees, shovels and gloves, your students do the plantings! Contact Suzanne for more information.
